AMERICANS FOR PROSPERITY ACTION COMMENDS KENDON UNDERWOOD’S VICTORY IN HD 90

LITTLE ROCK, AR– Americans for Prosperity Action (AFP Action) today congratulated Kendon Underwood on his runoff electoral victory in Arkansas’ House District 90. AFP Action endorsed Underwood this cycle, supporting the candidate through digital efforts, direct mail and grassroots support.

“Congratulations to Kendon Underwood on this incredible victory for the state of Arkansas and the people of the district,” said AFP Action Senior Advisor Ryan Norris. “We’re proud to have been able to mobilize our grassroots and digital efforts for a policy champion like Underwood and even more proud of the hard work of our activists and volunteers within the district. With Arkansas behind other states on so many metrics, we need a representative who will put forward transformational legislation to rapidly move our state forward. Underwood is a small business owner and a principled leader who we’re confident will put our families first by championing educational freedom and fiscally responsible policies in Little Rock if elected in November.”

Background

Americans for Prosperity Action endorsed Underwood this cycle, citing Underwood earned the support for his commitment to:

Educational Freedom: Underwood will support giving families access to more educational opportunities and freedom for their children to flourish in the educational setting that works best for their unique needs.

Regulatory Reform: As a small business owner, Underwood is dedicated to supporting policies that reduce red tape and make it easier for businesses to thrive and create more jobs.

Tax Reform: Arkansas has some of the highest tax rates in the country. Underwood knows that high taxes hurt Arkansas families and will fight to make sure hardworking Arkansans keep more of what they earn by lowering the tax burden.

Winning in 2024

Ready to Make a Difference?

You have an opportunity to
change the course of America.

As much as 71% of America now believes we’re on the wrong track. This ought to point to a decisive win, and yet there is tremendous risk of candidates diametrically opposed to our values winning in 2024.

Here’s why:

  • The Republican Party is nominating many flawed candidates who — as we’ve seen before — lack the ability to win in the general election.

  • The Democratic Party is seizing on this opportunity — and responding with even more extreme policies that limit freedom and stifle American innovation.

If the candidates who can change America’s course fail to win in 2024, we risk even greater decline as a nation. That’s why this unprecedented Early Primary strategy is so vital.

We must begin NOW to:

  • Identify strong candidates who can win not just in primaries, but also in the general election.
  • Identify and persuade millions of new voters to turn out for the primaries, so the best candidates win.
  • Make sure the best candidates win on Election Day 2024.

It is imperative we elect better candidates who will WIN in 2024 and enact policies that empower people to improve their lives.

The Reality

Our sitting president has a 31% approval rating in our internal tracking polling. There’s no reason why any president, of any party, should ever be reelected with a 31% approval rating.

The Opportunity

The best way to win in 2024 is to learn from the mistakes that have doomed past election efforts. More and more people now define themselves as Independent (41%), rather than Republican (28%) or Democrat (28%). However, as long as only a narrow group vote in the primaries (14%), we can’t expect to see the change the country needs.

There’s no reason why any president, of any party, should ever be reelected with a

31%

approval rating.

Lessons Learned

One of the most important lessons Americans for Prosperity Action learned in 2022 was that voters want better candidates. In order to get better candidates, we must: a) get involved in elections earlier than ever and, b) engage thousands more voters in the primaries.

When we get involved early, we win. In 2022, 82% of candidates backed by AFP or AFP Action won in the general election in November … but only when we had engaged in the primary to make sure the best candidate emerged. When we were NOT engaged at the primary level, our win percentage dropped to 64%.

How you can be confident this plan will work.

In 2022, AFP and AFP Action engaged in 22 primaries at the federal level, and nearly 200 more at the state level. 82% of the candidates we backed won in the general election in November… but only when we had engaged in the primary to make sure the best candidate emerged. When we were NOT engaged at the primary level, our win percentage dropped to 64%.

From our data capabilities to our grassroots game planning, AFP and AFP Action have the edge.

Case Study

Eric Schmitt’s 2022 U.S. Senate race in Missouri is a case study in how early support for winning candidates can result in a very high return on your investment.

Leveraging crucial data from i360, AFP Action’s grassroots teams knocked on the doors of 446,000 targeted non-primary voters to persuade them to come out and vote for Schmitt, who was one of 25 Republican candidates in the primary! Nearly 80,000 of them showed up and cast their first-ever votes in a GOP primary. Schmitt won, and as the strongest candidate, he went on to handily beat his closest challenger in the general election by 274,000 votes.

Tim Phillips roadshow inspires activists, motivates voters

Americans for Prosperity Action Senior Advisor Tim Phillips has been on a national tour over the past few weeks, visiting with activists and voters in Georgia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Texas in support of policy champions.

Those champions include Representative Scott Perry of Pennsylvania’s 10th Congressional District, Georgia Senator David Perdue, Texas Senator John Cornyn, and North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis.

While Election Day is still nearly eight months away, it’s never too early for AFP Action activists to get into the field to push the reelection of policy champions.

Phillips said Perry’s “voting record has been good across the board on issues we care deeply about. So, for us, it was a no-brainer to start early.”

In an email to activists, Phillips noted that Texas has added 1.93 million new voters to its rolls since Cornyn was last on the ballot, and also pointed to a Gallup poll showing 45 percent of voters consider themselves independent.

“Add all that up and it means that an operation like ours — Americans for Prosperity Action — is the best positioned group in the country to reach these voters who don’t align with a party,” he wrote. “And that’s why I’m down here with our team, joining their grassroots work — the one-on-one voter contact which is so critical to getting John Cornyn re-elected.”

Phillips’ roadshow will take him to a host of other states — and into the offices and living rooms of thousands of more activists and voters — as the 2020 election unfolds.

“It’s a big year — and we are all in.”

AFP Action follows up Tillis’ primary win with new ad

Senator Thom Tillis won a decisive Super Tuesday primary victory last week. To further drive momentum in support of Senator Tillis’ reelection, Americans for Prosperity Action released an ad the next day that emphasizes Tillis’ work in Washington to create more prosperity for North Carolina.

“Under the leadership of our senator, Thom Tillis, our economy is booming,” the ad says, hitting notes AFP Action’s efforts have been emphasizing over the last few months. “Throughout his career, Thom Tillis has been a champion for the people of North Carolina,” said Senior Advisor Chris McCoy. “[He has] fought to create more jobs and more opportunities for our state.”

To share this message with North Carolina voters, AFP Action is utilizing its grassroots and media capabilities. Activists are on the ground making calls, sending texts, and knocking doors to talk with friends and neighbors about reelecting Sen. Tillis because of his strong record of job creation and pro-economic growth policies.

Tiffany’s Wisconsin win a testament to grassroots activism

State Senator Tom Tiffany’s victory in the February 18 primary in the Wisconsin’s 7th Congressional District represented “another win for the grassroots by demonstrating how our model of citizen to citizen contact truly makes the difference,” according to Americans for Prosperity Action Senior Advisor Eric Bott.

Tiffany’s 15-point victory margin was a testament to Americans for Prosperity Action’s focus on informing voters that if elected, Tiffany would drive policies that promote economic growth and make life more affordable for Wisconsin families. AFP Action was  particularly active in promoting his position in favor of repealing antiquated Davis-Bacon labor mandates that kill jobs and drive up the cost of construction projects in the Badger State and across the country.

The contrasts with his opponents’ policy preferences were communicated to voters through 300,000 contacts by activists braving winter weather, and 68 events held by AFP Action. The group also engaged in direct mail, digital and radio campaigns to spread the word.

Tom Tiffany Will Bring Principled Leadership to Washington

HUDSON, WI—Americans for Prosperity Action (AFP Action) tonight released a statement congratulating State Senator Tom Tiffany in his primary election victory and urged Wisconsinites to support Tiffany in the special election on May 12th. The group will continue to leverage its grassroots and other tactics to support Tiffany’s general election bid.

AFP Action Senior Advisor Eric Bott issued the following statement:

“We’re excited primary voters recognize the same principled leadership that we see in State Senator Tom Tiffany. Tonight’s results exemplify another win for the grassroots by demonstrating how our model of citizen to citizen contact truly makes the difference. Our activists look forward to continuing to charge through the snow in support of Tiffany before May’s special election.”

Background:

AFP Action endorsed Tom Tiffany in a memo addressed to interested parties.

AFP Action activists contacted more than 300,000 voters throughout this effort, at the doors, on the phones, through text messaging, and held 68 events. The grassroots organization also sent targeted direct mail in support of Tiffany, ran digital advertisements across multiple platforms, and launched radio advertisements in the district.

AFP Action is supporting Tom Tiffany for the policies he’s previously supported and dedicated to continuing to support. One major contrast between Tiffany and his primary opponent was on job-killing labor mandates. AFP Action released a statement urging his opponent to reject the prevailing wage and Davis-Bacon in December.

AFP Action Senior Advisor Jerome Greener’s statement on slate of endorsements:

“These candidates have a proven track record of leading on policies that will help every Texan pursue their American dream and reach their full potential. AFP Action and LIBRE Action are proud to endorse the following policy champions:

Eddie Lucio (SD-27): Sen. Lucio’s leadership on educational freedom has transcended partisanship and led to important reforms for Texas students receiving access to the educational opportunity best fitting their needs, regardless of income level or ZIP code.

Matt Shaheen (HD-66): As a member of the Ways and Means Committee, Rep. Shaheen has been an influential voice on policies that reduce red tape and allow Texans to elect exactly how much more local government they want and are willing to pay for. Shaheen has also been an important voice to make Texas’s criminal justice system one that is smarter on crime.

Jeff Leach (HD-67): Rep. Leach showed important leadership to lower the tax burden on hard working Texans as well as played an instrumental role in fighting for smart on crime criminal justice reform, taking steps to ensure that our streets are safe and that those who have paid their debt to society have the opportunity to successfully return to their communities as productive members of their communities.

Mayes Middleton (HD-23): Rep. Middleton showed leadership, even when it was politically difficult, by supporting efforts to ban taxpayer-funded lobbying. He also is a champion on educational freedom, reducing the tax burden on hardworking Texans, and reining in overzealous government spending.

Jim Murphy (HD-133): Rep. Murphy is a champion on economic opportunity principles, especially his focus on lowering the tax burden for Texas families through substantial property tax reform, reducing the burdensome business margins tax, and increasing transparency with local tax abatements.

Valoree Swanson (HD-150): Rep. Swanson wants to level the playing field for all Texans and stop the practice of government picking winners and losers in the marketplace, which is why she rejected crony legislative policies. She has also supported policies that allow small businesses to prosper and spur economic growth.

Dawn Buckingham (SD-24):  Despite it being only her second legislative session, Sen. Buckingham has shown great promise and leadership in support of criminal justice reform, reducing red tape, and further promoting economic opportunities.

Taylor has been a stalwart leader in securing meaningful tax reform for hardworking Texans.

In a memo to interested parties, AFP Action Senior Advisor Tim Phillips issued the following:

“ Since Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers was first elected to represent Washington’s 5th Congressional district, she has been a tireless advocate for policies that remove barriers that stand in the way of Eastern Washington’s prosperity… On issue after issue, she won praise for maintaining civility at a time of hyper partisanship, and for working to build diverse coalitions on a range of issues while standing fast on principle. She is exactly the kind of lawmaker we need more of in Washington, D.C., and voters in Eastern Washington should send her back again.”
