AFP Action Urges New and Returning Lawmakers to Find Common Ground on Important Issues

Arlington, VA – Following tonight’s midterm elections, Americans for Prosperity (AFP) Action ℠ Senior Advisor Tim Phillips issued the following statement:

“Over the course of the midterm elections, AFP Action was proud to support candidates who championed policies to improve the lives of the American people. We congratulate them on their hard-fought campaigns, and we hope that the important conversations on the campaign trail will translate to progress in upcoming legislative sessions.

“As the campaign season ends, and lawmakers make plans for new legislative sessions that will begin early next year, we look forward to continuing to build broad coalitions at both the state and federal level to find common ground, and unite to break down barriers that prevent Americans from achieving their dreams and leading fulfilling lives.

“Leaders in Washington and in the states can quickly repair divides in our country by breaking the cycle of partisan politics that has delayed progress on issues critical to the wellbeing of the American people. There are a number of issues that have already earned broad bipartisan support and can serve as a catalyst for a new tone for our public discourse – specifically, righting the wrongs of our criminal justice system, finding a permanent solution for Dreamers, and eliminating corporate welfare that is rigging the system against hardworking taxpayers.”

We also want to thank our grassroots army of volunteers who helped us contact over one million Tennesseans for Marsha Blackburn during this critical election,” said AFP Action Senior Advisor Tori Venable. “We look forward to seeing Senator Marsha Blackburn continue to do the peoples’ work by tackling mandatory spending reforms and reducing the tax burden overall, so the rest of America can keep more of their income with lower taxes like many Tennesseans do.”

AFP Action: Hollingsworth Re-Election Proves Hoosier Support for Economic Opportunity

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Americans for Prosperity Action® (AFP Action) on Tuesday asserted that Congressman Trey Hollingsworth’s (IN-9) re-election was proof of Hoosier’s desire for fiscal restraint and greater economic opportunity. AFP Action had urged Hoosiers of Indiana’s 9th Congressional District to vote for Trey Hollingsworth after identifying the congressman as a champion of policies critical to removing barriers to opportunity and helping people improve their lives.

AFP Action Senior Advisor Justin Stevens issued the following statement:

“Another two years of Rep. Trey Hollingsworth means another two years of his active leadership against reckless Washington spending. Hoosiers can rely on Rep. Hollingsworth to prioritize principles over politics, even when it’s difficult or unpopular. Though we’ve made great strides on issues such as tax reform during his tenure, we look forward to seeing Rep. Hollingsworth make even more meaningful progress on other bold reforms that will break down barriers to opportunity and give Hoosier communities and businesses the best opportunity to thrive.”

U.S. Rep. Trey Hollingsworth has consistently led on policies that make it easier for Hoosiers to thrive. He supported the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act that increased take-home pay for millions of Americans, and he has been an outspoken opponent of the policy and fiscal nightmare that is single-payer health care. Rep. Hollingsworth was also one of just two members of Indiana’s congressional delegation to reject the $1.3 trillion omnibus spending bill in March that pushed total Washington spending above $4 trillion annually for the first time. In September, Rep. Hollingsworth was again just one of two members of the delegation to reject H.R. 6157, another huge appropriations bill that kept spending at unsustainable levels.

Background:

Rep. Trey Hollingsworth was one of only two members of Indiana’s congressional delegation to vote against the $1.3 trillion omnibus in March.

Americans for Prosperity Action: Voters Have High Hopes for Hawley

Arlington, VA – Americans for Prosperity Action(SM) congratulated Josh Hawley on his election to the U.S. Senate. The group also applauded its grassroots activists for their inspiring effort to boost Hawley’s victory and praised Missourians for making the right choice.

AFP Action Senior Adviser Jeremy Cady released the following statement:

“This election is proof Missouri voters wanted solutions, not more partisan bickering. Josh’s enthusiasm for tackling our broken health care system, growing federal debt, and government overreach is why we supported him and why we’re excited he’ll be representing Missouri.

“Our activists were nothing short of spectacular and showed that great results can be achieved with hard work and determination. And now that the elections are over, we hope Washington can come together to rise above the partisanship and deliver meaningful results to the American people.”

Background

Activists and staff knocked on over 65,000 doors and called close to 1,000,000 Missourians advocating against Sen. McCaskill. Since taking office in 2006, Sen. McCaskill voted for the government takeover of health care, opposed qualified judges, and has contributed to a ballooning U.S. debt that has surpassed $21 trillion.

McCaskill’s Missteps—The Worst of the Worst

Sen. McCaskill has been in Washington for over a decade. While there, she has put partisan politics first, leaving the people of Missouri behind. She’s made a lot of missteps, but we’ve rounded up the worst of the worst. Check them out:

Misstep #1 – Claire McCaskill continually opposed qualified judges

We trusted Sen. McCaskill to support judges who are dedicated to upholding the Constitution and rule of law. So far, she’s betrayed that trust. For this reason, Sen. McCaskill doesn’t deserve another term.

Misstep #2 – McCaskill took money from the pharmaceutical companies AND voted for Obamacare, which has paved the way for record-setting pharmaceutical profits

Obamacare has been a disaster in Missouri. Individual market premiums increased 145 percent in just four years. Our prescription drug costs have followed suit. Sen. McCaskill has taken money from the pharmaceutical industry, backed a law filled with giveaways for that industry and stood by as you scrape to afford your prescriptions.

Misstep #3 – McCaskill opposed legislation eliminating the estate tax

Farmers are subject to crippling estate taxes that allow the government to take what they’ve built before it gets to their families. Sen. McCaskill hasn’t done enough to help them. She has opposed legislation that would eliminate the estate tax, sticking with her party over the farmers of Missouri.

Misstep #4 – McCaskill opposed new options for affordable health care

It’s true. Just a few weeks ago, Sen. McCaskill supported a bill that would have limited more affordable, flexible health plans. And when given a chance to provide residents of our state with health care options, Sen. McCaskill chose to cling to Obamacare and limit health care choices.

Misstep #5: Sen. McCaskill voted against lowering your taxes

Yes. Sen. McCaskill voted NO on a historic tax break for Missouri workers and families.

In the year since tax reform passed, thousands of Missourians have seen more money in their paychecks. Missouri companies have begun creating new jobs, giving bonuses to their current employees, increasing benefits and lowering costs for consumers.

Sen. McCaskill stood directly in the way of economic progress in Missouri, plain and simple.

This isn’t about politics, this is about policies. Sen. McCaskill has shown Missouri that she won’t support policies that are best for our state. Time and again, she chose her party and partisanship over pro-growth and pro-freedom policies.

It’s time for Sen. McCaskill to leave Washington. I hope that you’ll sign the pledge and vote against Sen. McCaskill on Tuesday, November 6th.

ICYMI: Phil Bredesen’s health-care fix should worry any business owner, taxpayer or patient

Americans for Prosperity Action Senior Advisor Tori Venable | Knoxville News Sentinel

Back in the day, saloons used to offer a deal: a no-cost midday meal—with the purchase of a drink, of course. The cost of all that food had to be covered somehow. And so, the saying was born, “there’s no such thing as a free lunch.”

It’s as true for government programs as it was for 19th century pub grub. Someone always pays for the “freebies” politicians offer.

Case in point, the single-payer health care plan that U.S. Senate candidate Phil Bredesen supports.

But Bredesen’s “fix” should worry any business owner, taxpayer or patient in the Volunteer State. He wants to take choices away from doctors and patients and put them in the hands of unelected, unaccountable bureaucrats in Washington.

This new one-size-fits-all government-run health care system would cost trillions of dollars, as Bredesen acknowledges. He says a 33 percent tax on incomes would cover it but realizes that nobody would be willing to impose such a levy on hardworking Americans. So, instead, he proposes a 19.3 percent federal payroll tax to be split between employer and employee.

Bredesen would create “the American Medical Standards Panel” to go diagnosis by diagnosis and come up with a uniform standard of care, which would be published in what he calls, in an irony that apparently escapes him, “the Red Book.” The panel would also establish a mechanism to measure health care providers’ conformity with those standards.

Higher quality customized care would still be available, Bredesen allows, but only for people who can pay out of pocket — in other words, the wealthy.

This is not an idea we want Tennessee’s U.S. senators to be pushing in Congress.

We need leaders who respect the sacred relationship between doctors and their patients and understand that together, they make the best health care decisions; who recognize that cutting red tape and getting bureaucrats out of the way will allow medical providers to innovate and make quality care more affordable; who know there’s no such thing as a free lunch; and who realize that sending more money to Washington isn’t a cure for anything.

Americans for Prosperity Action® Launches Video Supporting Tom Emmer

BURNSVILLE, MN – Americans for Prosperity Action® today announced the launch of a digital video highlighting U.S. Rep. Tom Emmer’s work in helping pass tax cuts that saved families $2,000, his support for giving more health care choices for Minnesota’s veterans, and opposition to wasteful spending.

View the video here.

AFP Action Senior Advisor Jason Flohrs issued the following statement:

“Rep. Tom Emmer is delivering results to Minnesota and his pro-growth policies are spurring our economy and helping Minnesota families across the state. While Rep. Emmer worked to help pass tax reform that is putting more money in families’ pockets, he has also demonstrated he won’t abandon his principles and is willing to stand up to Washington’s addiction to spending. Minnesotans have a leader in Congressman Emmer who is determined to remove barriers to opportunity and has been a champion for all Minnesota taxpayers. Our activists will continue to urge residents of the sixth district to re-elect Congressman Emmer.”

Background:

Earlier this month, Americans for Prosperity Action℠ announced support for Tom Emmer. AFP Action and its activists will keep the momentum going with continued outreach to voters through Election Day, November 6th.

  • Rep. Tom Emmer voted for the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which delivers crucial tax relief to families and businesses.
  • Rep. Emmer voted against the $854 billion spending bill in September and against the $1.3 trillion omnibus in March.
